A delicious and healthier alternative to traditional meatloaf, this BBQ turkey meatloaf recipe is made with lean and well-seasoned ground turkey topped with barbecue sauce and fresh-sliced green onions. Easy to make and versatile, this main course pairs perfectly with sides like mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad, making it a popular weeknight dinner for families.
Sauté onion. Sauté onion in olive oil for 5 minutes or until soft.
Season meat. Place ground turkey in a bowl, add cooked onion, egg, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Add panko crumbs, milk, BBQ seasoning, garlic paste, salt, and pepper.Mix everything thoroughly.
Form a loaf. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper or grease generously with oil. Press meat mixture into the pan, smoothing out the top.
Bake. Bake uncovered for about 40 minutes or until the middle of loaf reaches a temperature of 165ºF.
Top meatloaf with sauce. In a small bowl, mix honey (or sugar) with barbecue sauce). Carefully remove loaf from oven and brush the top with sauce. Bake for another 10 minutes.
Garnish and serve. Remove from oven and top with sliced green onions. Slice and serve.
Notes
Choose your favorite bottle blend of barbecue seasoning or mix your own using a blend of garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, and chili powder.
Choose your favorite style of BBQ sauce. Honey barbecue is great if you like a sweeter flavor, smoky is excellent, or try something spicy. Your choice!
Feel free to substitute up to ½ cup of the ground turkey with veggies of your choice to pack in more vitamins. I like chopped spinach, carrots, squash, or zucchini. Cabbage works, too!
