    Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream

Back in July there's this little holiday, National Strawberry Sundae Day. I was commissioned by a publisher to come up with a recipe to celebrate the holiday and so I thought a homemade strawberry ice cream recipe was in order.

Making the ice cream was fun and it turned out delicious. I think I had even more fun though, turning this holiday into a little strawberry sundae picnic! I thrifted this cute set of plates for the occasion and set up a kid-friendly table in the grass (in case plates were dropped or thrown!) with an overturned crate.

I set our table with an old baby blanket, picked the some of the few remaining flowers from the garden and grabbed some fresh strawberries from the farmer's stand. Unfortunately, our strawberry plants only produced one strawberry this year. I don't think they are getting enough sun but at least I was able to use some of the leaves and a flower for decoration!

Making ice cream is a fall festival tradition for our extended family. It's a fun family activity to do in the fall as a sort of last hurrah as we get into the colored months. And bonus that the ice cream doesn't melt as you can see it was starting to do when I took these photos in July.

If you don't have an ice cream maker that's OK. Here's how to make ice cream without a machine.

To make a sundae, I just used a plain waffle (I cheated and used frozen ones but you could make your own and I'm sure they would be a million times better), strawberry ice cream, strawberry syrup, whipped cream and fresh-picked strawberries to top it off.
