Here's a classic Dark and Stormy cocktail recipe to add to your line up of drinks you can easily make at home.

But first can we just take a moment to appreciate how pretty this drink is? I love how the ingredients layer to create this beautiful gradient of color. It reminds me of a sky before a storm comes which I'm sure must be where it gets its name.

The drink is easy to make. All you need is ginger beer, bitters, dark rum and a slice of lime. Here's a question I hear a lot...

Is ginger beer the same as ginger ale?

Nope! The secret to a delicious dark and story is finding some strong ginger beer. You can use ginger ale, but it doesn't have the same robust flavor as ginger beer or the spicy quality so it's worth seeking out ginger beer for this particular cocktail since the ginger beer is what carries the majority of the flavor.

Are you a fan of rum?

If so, then this drink may be for you. A Dark and Stormy is very similar to a Moscow Mule, only it features rum and bitters.

So a little bit about rum drinks and then we'll get to the drink recipe...

Rum and coke has always been my drink of choice. Being from Annapolis, Maryland, the self-proclaimed sailing capital of the world, it's what people drink to pay homage to the sailors of years' past I suppose.

Here's some interesting discussion about the origins of rum if you're interested, dating back to the 1700. Rum was common in the Caribbean and was rationed to sailors by the Navy. So there are a few reasons why rum and pirates are typically lumped together.

Having just returned home from a Disney cruise (an amazing experience!), I have pirates, boats, and rum on the brain and so I thought I'd share some of the experience with you in the form of a rum cocktail recipe.
