This is a game day game changer. These 5-ingredient Buffalo chicken totchos are simple to prep and are a crowd favorite. Each bite offers seasoned chicken, smothered in cheese and buttery hot sauce, all on top of crispy potatoes, finished off with green onions for a dose of freshness and spice.
★ Why You'll Love this Recipe ★
Totchos are a mash-up of nachos and tater tots that bring together the perfect balance between soft and crispy. So, instead of laying nacho chips with all the fixings, you start with a base of cooked and crisped tater tots. Then you layer on hearty chicken melty cheese, Buffalo wing sauce, and finally green onions.
Made with only 5 ingredients you can have this appetizer ready in just 5 minutes of prep and 15 minutes of bake time for a snack that's ready in 20 minutes and feeds a small crowd. Perfect football food!
Easy to make and always a hit, totchos are a neighborhood favorite appetizer. A game-day recipe that will likely become a tradition for you, as well.
The Buffalo Chicken Totchos are:
Simple. You only need 5 ingredients for these totchos to come together which makes them simple to whip up.
Bold in flavor: For anyone who loves buffalo hot wings or chicken sandwiches, this totcho variation comes with the same, all-out flavor.
Versatile: You can easily dress this recipe up by drizzling on ranch dressing or adjust the amount of each topping as you see fit.
★ Ingredients You'll Need ★
Here's a look at everything you'll need as well as a few easy substitutions.
Tater tots: Any that you find at the grocery store will work. Cook them according to the package directions before you need them.
Shredded chicken: Of course, you can make and shred your own chicken, or shred a rotisserie chicken yourself; however, grabbing already-shredded rotisserie chicken will cut down on a lot of prep time. Keep in mind, whatever seasoning is on the shredded chicken will alter the flavor of the chicken totchos. I recommend traditional for this reason.
Shredded pepper jack cheese: You specifically want the pepper jack cheese as it brings a whole other Tex-Mex level to the totchos. Other cheeses like mozzarella or Colby jack can work though.
Green onion: Chop or slice it finely and don’t overlook the flavor combination it brings to a spicy buffalo sauce. It's subtle but really makes a difference!
Buffalo Wing Sauce: Frank's Wings sauce is what you want for this recipe, not just plain hot sauce. Wing sauce has more of a buttery flavor that's just perfect as a topping.

★ Tips & FAQs ★
How do I get more crunch on the tater tots?
You can cook the tater tots in the oven as per the package directions; however, cooking them in the air fryer will add more crisp to the outer layer of the tots, providing an extra cripsy base of your totchos.
How can I adjust the flavor of the totchos?
If you love the heat of buffalo sauce, toss your chicken in half the sauce listed before layering it. This gives the chicken and tater tots some extra flavor while it cooks.
Storing Leftovers
In general, totchos taste best when freshly made; however, if you have leftovers, they can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days. Let them cool fully before wrapping them loosely in foil.
To reheat your totchos:
Add them to your air fryer for 5 minutes or bake at 350ºF for 10 minutes or until cheese is soft and melty again and chicken is warmed through.
What can I serve with buffalo chicken tatchos?
You can serve your totchos with a side of ranch or blue cheese dressing to help balance the heat of the chicken. A side of baby carrots and celery are nice, too.
If you want to make these extra spicy, top the totchos with sliced fresh or pickled jalapeños for an extra punch. Sliced black olives also make a nice topping.

Instructions
- Cook tater tots. Bake or air fry tater tots according to the package directions. Use a 9x13 sheet pan lined with parchment paper. When done, remove from oven and turn oven to broil - high.
- Add chicken and cheese. Layer on shredded chicken and cheese then broil on high for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and starts to bubble.
- Garnish and serve. Remove totchos from the oven and top them with the buffalo sauce and green onions. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Cooking tater tots in the air fryer gives them extra crisp, but the oven will work as well.
- Using shredded rotisserie chicken really cuts down on the prep time for this recipe and gives you chicken that is already seasoned; however, you are more than welcome to cook and shred your own chicken with your favorite seasonings if you have some extra time.
- Another great way to use your buffalo sauce is by tossing your chicken in half of the buffalo sauce. This will give your chicken and tater tots some extra buffalo flavor while the totchos cook.
- Other cheeses you can use include mozzarella, white cheddar, and colby jack.
