    ★ Why You'll Love this Recipe ★

This vintage-inspired dessert can be made with or without alcohol as a fun St. Patrick's Day dessert or simply to enjoy a cool, creamy, and mint-chocolate dessert for any occasion.

If you love the combination of mint and chocolate like I do, then you will love this easy dessert.

    A no-bake dessert!

This is a fun green dessert that's perfect for celebrating St. Patrick's Day, but it's also a great summer picnic dessert because it's no-bake and the mint makes it so refreshing.

    Kid-friendly Grasshopper Pie

    Chocolate + Mint = Heaven

The crunchy chocolate Oreo crust pairs so nicely with the creamy filling. Decorate the top with whipped cream, fresh mint leaves, shaved chocolate, and/or chocolate syrup!

    Kid-friendly, Nonalcoholic Recipe

This Grasshopper pie recipe is kid-friendly in that is does not contain alcohol per more traditional recipes; however, if you are serving adults who are of age, then you can easily sub in alcoholic ingredients. Check the FAQs for more info.

    ★ Ingredients You'll Need ★

This tasty and fun GREEN dessert is easy to make using just a handful of ingredients.

    Here's a look at everything you'll need.

    Grasshopper Pie Ingredients
    • Oreo cookies. Store brand is totally fine.
    • Butter. Salted butter, melted.
    • Milk. Any % works. Full-fat will give you a slightly creamier pie.
    • Marshmallows. The mini ones melt nicely and are easy to measure but large ones work too.
    • Mint extract. I prefer peppermint extract, it's stronger. It's similar to a candy cane; however, mint extract will also work and will give you a more mild mint flavor if that's what you're after.
    • Whipping cream. You'll need to make sure to use heavy whipping cream so it can be whipped and made fluffy. Half and half will not work.
    • Green food coloring (optional) but adds that festive touch of green this pie is famous for. If you are anti-food coloring though, this pie still looks very nice in an off-white color.

★ How to Make this Recipe ★

There is no baking required, just some microwave action and some prep.

Here is a glance at the steps:

    ★ Tips & FAQs ★

Does grasshopper pie recipe contain alcohol?

You can opt to make it either way. Choose a kid-friendly, nonalcoholic recipe if you want to avoid alcohol.
However, if you would like to put an adult spin on this, you can. Here's how:
Replace mint extract with ¼ cups crème de menthe.
You can also add crème de cacao. If adding both crème de menthe and crème de cacao, use 2 tablespoon of each.

How long can Grasshopper Pie be stored in the refrigerator?

It can be stored for up to 3 days in the refrigerator; however, keep in mind the Oreo cookie crust will soften so you'll have less crunch after a while.

Can you freeze Grasshopper Pie for later?

Yes, you can freeze it, but the Oreo crust may not be as crunchy once thawed.

Can I omit the green food coloring in grasshopper pie?

Yes, you can omit it, the pie won't have the traditional green color, but it still looks nice garnished as an off-white pie. You can garnish with fresh mint leaves or Oreos with mint centers for a festive touch of green.

Can I substitute Cool Whip for whipped cream?

Yes. You can use Cool Whip if you prefer. It offers a different flavor but some people like it even better and it's less work!

How can I prevent Oreo pie crust from becoming soggy?

Make sure the filling does not sit too long in the crust.

Can I make grasshopper pie ahead of time for a party?

This pie is best made fresh so the Oreo crust stays crunchy but you can make it in advance by preparing the filling and crust and then separately storing them each in the refrigerator, up to a day in advance. Add the filling to the crust and add garnishes right before serving.

What can I use to garnish grasshopper pie?

You can top this grasshopper pie with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, whole or crushed Oreos, and/or mint leaves for decoration.

    Instructions

    Prepare Crust:

    • Crush Oreo cookies in a food processor.
In a large bowl or in the food processor, mix the melted butter into the cookie crumbs until well combined.
Press mixture evenly into the bottom and up the sides of a pie dish to form the crust. Use the back of a spoon to press it firmly.
Place crust in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the filling.

    Make Filling

    • Whip the cream. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to whip the heavy cream just until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to overwhip. Set aside.
Melt marshmallows with milk. In a saucepan over low heat, combine milk and marshmallows. Stir constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
Add mint and green color. Remove pan from heat, stir in the mint extract and green food coloring until well blended.
Chill filling in the fridge for about 10 minutes.
Gently fold the cooled marshmallow mixture into the whipped cream.

    Assemble Pie:

    • Pour filling into the chilled Oreo crust, spreading it smooth and flat with a spatula.

    Chill, Garnish, Serve

    • Place pie in the refrigerator and let chill for at least 4 hours or until set. This will allow the flavors to meld and the pie to firm up.
Once pie is set, garnish with additional whipped cream, chocolate shavings, Oreo Cookies, and/or fresh mint leaves.
      Slice and serve chilled.

    Notes

    • Lightly grease your pie pan for easier serving and slicing.
    • Allow pie to set in the refrigerator for the full recommended time to achieve the best texture and flavor.
    • To create a marbled effect, gently swirl the green food coloring into the filling instead of fully incorporating it.
    • For a stronger mint flavor, adjust the amount of mint extract according to your preference.
    • To make the pie more decadent, consider adding chopped chocolate pieces or chocolate ganache between the crust and filling layers.
    • You can also melt the marshmallows in the microwave in a large glass bowl. Heat in :30 intervals and stir in between until melted.
