    Super fun and festive!

A dessert worthy of celebration! These American flag pretzel rods are easy to make and beautifully patriotic. A crunchy pretzel base drizzled with red, white, and blue candy coating and studded white star sprinkles for an American flag aesthetic.

The perfect addition to any 4th of July party! These salty-sweet patriotic pretzels taste as good as they look and can be made ahead of time, so you’re not rushed.

    Easy to Make

Simple to whip up, each pretzel is drizzled with colored candy melts and then sprinkled with stars for a beautiful effect. The result is a sweet and savory crunch with every bite.

    Great for Bake Sales

Bring these to your celebration and not only will you brighten up the table, but you’ll have kids and parents alike coming back for more.

These can be made ahead and packaged so they make a great bake sale or fundraiser item.

    Patriotic Pretzel Rods

    These patriotic pretzel rods are:

    • Easy to make: The July 4th pretzel rods require only a handful of ingredients and minimal effort. They’re ready to go in about 20 minutes and can be made in advance to make your party day easier.
    • Colorful and festive: Pretzels are the perfect way to celebrate. They’re loaded with color and add a pop of patriotic festiveness to the table.
    • Great texture: If you love sweet and salt crunch, these are perfect for you. Between the crisp pretzel and the hardened candy, they’re delicious in each bite.
    • Versatile: Though this recipe is geared towards July 4th, you can really decorate them as you need to for any occasion depending on the candy melt colors you choose.

    ★ Ingredients You'll Need ★

You’ll need just 5 ingredients to make these cute, candy-coated pretzel snacks.

    Patriotic Pretzels

Pretzel rods: Take care if you’re buying these in bulk to grab ones that are intact and not chipped or broken. You only need 12 good ones.

Candy melts: You’ll need melts in red, white, and blue for the perfect drizzle. If you can't find the right colors at the grocery store, you can shop candy melts on Amazon, or add food coloring to melted white chocolate chips.

White star sprinkles: Regular white sprinkles could work here but the stars really step up the similarities to the American Flag. You could also go with gold or silver but the white really adds the best contrast. Shop star sprinkles on Amazon if you can't find them at your local store.

★ How to Make this Recipe ★

These pretzel rods are simple to make, in just a few steps.

Here's a look at the process:

    1. Heat and stir each color of and melts to soften.
    2. Add each color to a piping bag.
    3. Pipe on blue then press on star sprinkles.
    4. Pipe on red and let dry.
    5. Pipe on white stripes.
    6. Allow to dry then store or serve.

    Simple as that.

    ★ Tips & FAQs ★

Can I dip candy-coated pretzels instead of drizzle?

Though you can dip them, you would need much more candy melts to make it deep enough to dip the rods.
Drizzling the colors on top saves your money and looks stunning. If you do decide to dip them, make sure to put the candy melts into a tall slender cup to make it easier to dip.

How do I store candy-dipped pretzel rods?

Once the melted coating hardens on the pretzels, you can store the rods in an airtight container on the counter for 5-7 days though they taste best within 36 hours as that’s when they have the best crunch.
Ideally, store them in candy bags. You can find bags made just for candy-coated pretzel rods. Shop pretzel rod bags on Amazon.

What occasions are candy pretzel rods good for?

If you want to use this recipe for other social gatherings, vary the color of the candy melts first.
Blue and pink are great for baby showers, orange and black for Halloween, and red and green for Christmas. Then, choose themed sprinkles to place on and you’ll have a new kind of dessert each time!
You can also try using school colors to celebrate a graduation, or go with white and gold and silver for a wedding dessert table or an anniversary party. This recipe is quite versatile!

Can I use regular chocolate instead of candy melts?

Yes, you can use white chocolate instead of candy melts if you prefer. Simply melt white chocolate and tint it with food coloring to create the red and blue colors. For best results, use food coloring specifically made for chocolate to prevent seizing and add color mid-way through heating and melting.

    Instructions

    • Prepare pretzel rods. Lay out parchment paper and set out each pretzel rod on top of the paper.
    • Melt blue candy. Melt down blue candy melts by placing them in a microwave safe dish, and heating in one minute intervals, stirring after each, until smooth.
    • Pipe on blue candy. Scrape melted candy into a piping bag. Hold one pretzel and apply blue candy to the top ⅓ of the rod, using a back and forth motion. Rotate the rod in your hand as needed to cover all sides.
    • Add stars. Before blue candy coating cools completely, carefully press on star sprinkles. Then set on pretzel rod on the parchment paper to cool. Repeat adding blue and stars to each pretzel rod.
    • Add red candy coating. Heat and stir red melting chocolate, in the same fashion. Add to piping bag then pipe red candy onto on the rest of each pretzel (leaving a small section at the bottom to hold onto).
Place on parchment paper to let cool and set.
    • Add white stripes. Melt down white candy melts and add to another piping bag. Drizzle across the red portion of your pretzel, leaving space between, to create stripes, as shown.
Let cool and set then serve or package in clear plastic.

    Notes

It helps to put each empty piping bag into a tall glass and fold the large opening over the rim of the glass. This keeps it open and frees your hands to fill the bag with the melted chocolate, scraping the candy into the piping bag.
If using disposable piping bags, you may need to cut a small hole at the end.
